Webinar with Brittani Orona

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Hope and Renewal: Fixing the Earth with Indigenous Environmental Stewardship during Climate Change.

In her third and final webinar, Brittani Orona, the 2020 Incomindios-Lippuner Fellow, provided an overview of how global warming is affecting Indigenous Peoples of North America in particular and what they are doing to address this change.

Returning land to Indigenous Peoples is a key step in protecting the climate and the environment, as this land is often the site of intensive natural resource extraction, one of the main causes of climate change. Indigenous activists' defense of the environment is also playing an increasingly important role. For example, indigenous communities are trying to prevent the construction of oil pipelines on indigenous territory, as in the well-known fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).
